Suggestions To The West

Want to talk about things to do and places to see in the Keweenaw? This is the place to do it.

Suggestions To The West

Postby Rattler on Thu Mar 11, 2010 11:16 am

Hello all,
Once again our group is planning a trip for several nights of camping and exploring the UP. This year we are going to head west out of Marquette but are bypassing the Keweenaw (not all want to!) and heading towards the Porkies. I am looking for some suggestions of interesting places to stop along the way. I really just started my looking but so far have Paulding Light and the B-17 Bomber crash site in the Porkies.

Anybody got anything else over in that direction? I am not sure how far west we are heading but I am thinking maybe all the way to Superior Falls. I plan on hitting the TORC race in Bark River on Aug. 15th, the last day of the trip.

BTW, here is the group's website if you are interested. There is room if you like to camp, explore and have a capable 4x4 (many are built for expedition-style travel).

Thanks!

One of the guys on the trip's grandparents used to own Adventure Mine several years ago so I think that is on the list too.

We were at the Adventure Mine tour quite a few years ago and wife found some old very well worn walking sticks with the words Adventure Mine carved into them leaning in the corner and ask the old timer there if he would sell them and she ended up buying them.I wonder if those were carved by that fellows grandparents.
If your going to the Adventure the Lake Mine is just a few miles from there and you can drive right up to the large rock house foundation. The old P.O.W. camp is not to far from there either.

I will shoot timbercruiser an email and ask him about the sticks.

POW camp? You have my attention. Any more details? I love this kind of stuff.

Got a messege from timbercruiser:

I remember my Grandpa did that in the mid eighties. I did a few myself the summer of 86. I have the one I made for myself in the garage.

P.O.W. Camp.jpg

I believe the P.O.W. camp is on the north side of South Laird Rd. between Bob Lake and Silver Mountain. There is a sign on the side of the road telling about it.I have not been there in 20 years I'm sure it's on that road but exactly where on the road I'm not so sure. When I was there it was mostly just foundations and side walks with some junk scattered about in the woods.Your typical copper country ghost town.
That's neat that they carved out those walking sticks for their tours.

Wow. Thanks for the info. I did a little more investigation and it turned out there were seveeral in the UP. I never knew that (if I did, I forgot!) and have always been a MI history buff.

I was watching a show about the CCC in Michigan last night on PBS. They mentioned that they converted some of the former CCC camps into POW camps (the CCC was defunct shortly before WWII).

You may want to stop at the town of Republic if you go that way. Neat little ghost town, couple of mines nearby, big open pit one right next to town, nice areas to stop by the Michigamme River.
