nailhed spent some time at the Norwich Mine this summer and gave us all a treat with documenting what he found. I decided to round up all of the parts into one post for easy reference later and for easy linking to :)

I think they have mountain lions up there now too, just to add a little more zest to the adventure.

Yes, there is definately a cougar roaming around my place in Phoenix. I've seen tracks for two years now, as recent as early February. Totally cool! Hopefully I can train him to keep the vandals off my land. 8-)

Hey nailhed, I've been wanting to send you a message about your Norwich report, and now that I've finally registered on this site, I can. I thought your reports were great. This would be my type of adventure. I have been in the Norwich area, but I never had the gumption to climb the rocks. After reading your account like two or three times, I have a couple of questions.
1) I take it that if you go up there today, you would not find the mine shafts in the condition that you found them? Would they now be capped? Or did they like dynamite them shut? Would you still be able to find the remnants of where they were?

2) What exactly is "Trenary Toast"? Is this something unique to the UP? I know there is a small town called Trenary sort of south and east of Marquette. Is that where it originated? Where can I pick up some? I gotta get some for my adventures this year!

3) Just curious, did you take this adventure by yourself? I was just wondering how you got some of the pictures of yourself looking at the mine shafts and sitting on someones picnic table.

Trenary Toast is a baked toast. Keeps for like 6 months and is super good. Really dry though, ya need to dip it in coffee. I ordered some a while back and it's super delicious. My kids and I love it but my wife hates it.

If you wait until you are up here, you can stop probably in any grocery store and get it. I usually see it in the bread aisle.

Can't say I've tried it, but I've sent it to relatives as gifts and they enjoyed it with coffee :)

1) i have not been back there since my initial adventure, so i have no firsthand knowledge of the current condition, but i hear (from others on this site) that they are all capped or caged. ROC posted some pics of their current status.

2) trenary toast, lol...yeah its only made in Trenary MI, but they ship all over. ive seen it in gas stations in the northern Mitten, and even one of my friends from Massachusetts ordered a huge box full, because he too is a backpacker. i think the Finns referred to that type of "preserved toast" as korpua. it is really more of a camping/hunting/survival food than a delicacy :D ...i however could eat it dry whenever. i happen to like it. but it is a very ideal backpacking food...its very light, very filling, and keeps supposedly for years (or so ive heard).

3)yes iwas 100% solo for this entire trip. i do this often. last year just happened to be a trip to Norwich. i was able to get the pics of myself by setting my camera down on a stump or tying it to a branch and setting the camera timer (10sec), then running into position for as un-posed looking of a picture as possible :D
i do this for scale

Thanks for the lowdown on Trenary Toast. The website link was quite helpful. Thanks, Jay.

I'll be adding Trenary Toast to my arsenal of day snacks along with beef jerkey and my secret formula trail mix. The only problem is I don't drink coffee, so I hope dunking it in Gatorade will suffice!

Just letting ya'll that there a few pretty big cats at the Norwich. This is fact. I've seen them with my own eyes. Sort of medium/dark brown with lighter on the underside in color. I've seen a smaller one at the "Jog" corner, (the curve about a few miles south of the Norwich Bluff) and a good sized one at my place. The big fella hangs near the Bluff tho.
