Holiday gift for Explorers

Just saw an ad for this new camera, and the geek in me is drooling. It's a Samsung CL65, 12.2 megapixel, bluetooth, wifi, and GPS. Not sure if it's available for sale yet, recommended retail is $399. I really wouldn't be interested in the camera overall, it's the integrated GPS that sounds neat to me. Basically it's supposed to tag each photo with the GPS location where it was taken. I'm not sure how it associates the coordinates with the photo, but it sounds like a neat idea. Could be a great thing for photos taken while out bushwhacking (where was it I shot that photo???).

So that got me thinking about whether someone else was doing this. A quick search led to another item called a Jobo PhotoGPS (retail $199) that mounts on the hot-shoe of any camera. It also captures the GPS location of each photo taken, and then you use their software on a PC to link the coords with the photos. There were also package deals where you got a DSLR camera, a GPS unit that integrates with the camera to tag photos with coords, and mapping software to display on a map where your pics were taken (either local mapping software or Google Earth). At least one said that the coords are written into the "photo's exif header", whatever that means. The average price on these packages was about $1500, which you could easily spend on a good DSLR camera.

Apologies in advance to the spouses/significant others of any geeks who end up adding something like this to their holiday wish list.

I found a good gift for your explorer."Copper Mining History" An historical Aerial Tour along Keweenaw's copper ridge by Neil Harri. It's a dvd that has 240 pitures of the mines between Norwich to Keweenaw Point taken from a plane. The pitures are like 3.5 MB a piece and you can zoom right in.You can't believe all the rock piles and foundations that you never see by road.
There's open adits in the side of mountains and I seen one so big you could drive a bus into it.There's two great pitures of the Quincy Smelter from different angles that you can see the whole works. The pitures are labled but just give a general location. If your not familiar with the area you would have a hard time pinpointing some of the locations but most of them you can tell.Example-The Norwich mine is listed as the Rockland Cliffs. But most of the time you can figure out your location by the towns nearby.I contacted Neil Harri and he gave me permission to post three photos but they had to be in small format.I have no idea how to do that so if you want to see them you will have to buy the dvd.I bought mine off ebay for 21.95 plus tax.

On Neil Harri's CD ,Piture # 21-Adventure Mine,If you zoom in on the trail in front of that front end loader it goes right into the mountain like a big tunnel.I have never seen anything like that around the Adventure when I went on the mine tour.Do you have any idea where that is? Than on piture # 22 it's the same area taken higher up and you can seen some type of recreation area made up of mine rock.Looks like there may be some mining foundations there.
