Just saw an ad for this new camera, and the geek in me is drooling. It's a Samsung CL65, 12.2 megapixel, bluetooth, wifi, and GPS. Not sure if it's available for sale yet, recommended retail is $399. I really wouldn't be interested in the camera overall, it's the integrated GPS that sounds neat to me. Basically it's supposed to tag each photo with the GPS location where it was taken. I'm not sure how it associates the coordinates with the photo, but it sounds like a neat idea. Could be a great thing for photos taken while out bushwhacking (where was it I shot that photo???).
So that got me thinking about whether someone else was doing this. A quick search led to another item called a Jobo PhotoGPS (retail $199) that mounts on the hot-shoe of any camera. It also captures the GPS location of each photo taken, and then you use their software on a PC to link the coords with the photos. There were also package deals where you got a DSLR camera, a GPS unit that integrates with the camera to tag photos with coords, and mapping software to display on a map where your pics were taken (either local mapping software or Google Earth). At least one said that the coords are written into the "photo's exif header", whatever that means. The average price on these packages was about $1500, which you could easily spend on a good DSLR camera.
Apologies in advance to the spouses/significant others of any geeks who end up adding something like this to their holiday wish list.
